Ask an expert

You could be forgiven for thinking that, because I wrote a 320-page book on tile, I am an expert on such technical matters as installation methods, grout maintenance, inkjet glazing methodologies, and the like. In fact, I am merely a style editor who can tell you all about how pretty and trendy those colorful new oversized glass tiles are–but not how thick a mortar bed is required below, or whether a crack-suppression membrane is advisable. (Or whether that latter question even makes sense.)

But like all style editors, I have at my disposal a rolodex of Knowledgeable People who I call in a panic when I need to know the finer points of substrates, coefficients of friction, porcelain coating, and variations on the running-bond pattern. Although The Tileist is primarily a vehicle for sharing cool new stuff and inspirational ideas, I also want it to be a place where readers can ask some meatier questions about this often daunting and intimidating product category.

I’ll eventually launch a series asking experts (contractor, installers, salespeople, interior designers) to answer all our nit-picky Qs. Sometimes one expert will answer multiple questions; other times a series of experts will weigh in on just one question. Use the comment feature here to add your queries and I’ll answer–er, get the experts to answer–as many of them as possible!

  3. I love your blog, and find a sincere appreciation for your comedic comment that after writing 30,000 words on tile, that this is mainly a visual blog.

I’ve owned and worked in the tile industry for 12 years, and now own Mission Stone and Tile in Nashville, TN. I think you would like a lot of our products. Our mainstay is that we offer a lot of boutique, high end mosaics and Italian products, but we import a great deal and offer to the retail public at discount pricing. Be sure to check our our INTERLOCKING CIRCLES.

    Thanks again!

  4. Hi,

I just found your blog and I’d love to subscribe via google reader but can’t find a button for it…do you have an RSS feed?

    • Hi Alex!
Have been very remiss at this but trying to add that functionality in the very near future. Will let you know when I get my act together! And in the meantime, thanks so much for checking out my blog :)

  5. Jen — Congrats on “getting the gold!” And many thanks for including us in your blog list!

  6. Hi Tilest!!

My 15 year old shower grout is failing, and it has become very difficult to keep clean. I assume I need to replace all of the grout. Bummer!

  7. I would be leary of using a 12×24 glass tile unless the substrate and installation is perfect. Ann Sacks has had to replace full baths of this tile only for it to crack again. Customer ended up using something else all together. Looks pretty but can not go just anywhere.

    • A VERY important point with any oversized tile! Substrate has to be both sturdy AND completely level. Posting about an interesting conversation I had with two educators from the National Tile Contractor’s Assoc. in the next week or so. that addresses some of the the caveats.

      Thanks for your comment!
